Singapore launches national initiative to promote healthier digital habits among children

(MENAFN) Lawrence Wong on Sunday unveiled a nationwide campaign aimed at helping families reduce excessive screen use and encourage healthier digital habits among children.

The initiative, called “Screen Smart From The Start,” is designed to support parents who are seeking practical guidance on managing their children's use of technology and digital devices.

As part of the campaign, the government introduced the **“Be Screen Smart”** online portal, which provides age-specific advice for three groups: children aged 0–6, 7–12, and 13–18. The platform offers recommendations on supervising online content, protecting children from inappropriate material, and establishing clear family rules regarding device use.

During the launch, Wong said the government would continue providing resources to help parents build healthy digital habits from an early age. He noted that while previous generations of parents worried about comics, television, and video games, today's digital environment presents greater challenges because of addictive platform designs, harmful content, and negative online interactions.

Among the measures he suggested were keeping phones away from family meals, avoiding smartphone use in bedrooms, and delaying children's access to smartphones for as long as practical.

The new portal will also highlight offline recreational and educational activities available to families, beginning with programs scheduled during Singapore's upcoming school holiday period.

The campaign reflects growing international concern about children's screen time, online safety, sleep quality, and the impact of digital technology on young people's development and well-being.
